Project to help strengthen the transmission network and support growing electricity demand across England and Wales
New high-voltage infrastructure to help connect more renewable energy and improve network resilience
GE Vernova to deliver advanced power transmission technology in collaboration with Laing O'Rourke for National Grid
LONDON, United Kingdom, (27 August) - GE Vernova (NYSE: GEV) today announced it has been chosen by Laing O'Rourke to deliver a new 400 kV Gas-Insulated Switchgear (GIS) substation at Chesterfield, part of National Grid's Brinsworth to Chesterfield and Chesterfield to High Marnham projects. The new substation will help increase the capacity of the electricity transmission network, supporting growing electricity demand, maintaining a secure and reliable energy supply and helping connect more sources of home-grown renewable energy.
GIS technology enables large amounts of electricity to be transmitted safely and reliably in modern high voltage transmission networks. The investment forms part of wider upgrades to the transmission network across Derbyshire, South Yorkshire and Nottinghamshire.

The projects form part of The Great Grid Upgrade, the largest overhaul of the electricity grid in generations. Through major infrastructure projects across England and Wales, it is helping to connect more clean, secure and home-grown energy to homes and businesses. As demand for electricity grows, the new substation will help move more power safely and reliably across the network.
The project is planned to use GE Vernova's SF₆-free g³ GIS technology, part of GRiDEATM, our portfolio of solutions to decarbonize the grid. This technology is an alternative to sulphur hexafluoride (SF₆) that maintains the same high levels of performance, safety and reliability required for modern transmission networks.
GE Vernova's scope includes design engineering, procurement, equipment delivery, site installation, testing and commissioning. The company will also provide primary and secondary engineering, protection and control systems, interface management, integration with the existing transmission network and the decommissioning of existing equipment.
GE Vernova has supplied high-voltage substations and transmission technologies to utilities around the world for decades. Its technologies help customers strengthen electricity networks, improve reliability and accelerate the transition to more secure, resilient and sustainable power systems.
