Chief John Drake and West End Synagogue Rabbi Joshua Kullock have marked this evening's beginning of Passover by Chief Drake assuming ownership of the congregation's leavened products for the duration of the eight-day holiday.
Jewish families are prohibited from owning bread and leavened products associated with grains during Passover, and in many instances, place those items in a closet or cupboard that will stay closed during the holiday. Rabbi Kullock is given power of attorney by members of his congregation to transfer ownership of the products to a non-Jew until Passover has ended. For 32 years, that person has been Nashville's police chief.
