Vancouver, WA - Today, U.S. Senator Patty Murray (D-WA), Vice Chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee, along with Vancouver Mayor Anne McEnerny-Ogle issued the following statement celebrating the news that the Coast Guard approved a fixed span design for the I-5 bridge replacement between Vancouver and Portland.
"Keeping the I-5 bridge replacement moving forward is how we keep all of Washington state moving forward. This next milestone reflects the years of hard work our region has done to address navigational needs and ensure the bridge works for everybody, especially Southwest Washington. This is great news for commuters who won't have to wait on a lift every time they cross the bridge and eliminates the only stoplight on I-5. This will be a big economic boost for the entire region as well-freight is going to get to where it needs to go a whole lot more quickly. This is a win-win-win for commuters, river users, and the entire Pacific Northwest. We're committed to working with partners at every level of government, and presenting a united front as a region, to replace the I-5 bridge as quickly as possible for a faster-and safer-commute."
As the top Democratic appropriator in Congress, Senator Murray has led Congressional efforts to secure the federal funding to make the I-5 bridge replacement a reality. A timeline of Senator Murray's longtime leadership on the I-5 Bridge Replacement Project over more than two decades is HERE. Murray last visited the bridge in August of 2024 to celebrate the influx of federal funding she secured.
