As from 16 July 2025, people aged over 16 can legally ride e-scooters and other Personal Mobility Devices (PMDs) on public roads and paths.
West Torrens is home to many off-road shared paths and, as such, regular users may find the paths busier than usual with activity.
Like cyclists, PMD riders will be required to wear a helmet and use a flashing light when riding at night or in low light. Riders are not to travel more than 10km/h on footpaths, shared paths and beaches.
E-scooters will be permitted on roads where the maximum speed limit is 60km/h, however they must travel in the bike lane at a speed of no greater than 25km/h.
Other battery powered devices, such as e-skateboards and e-solo-wheels, can travel on roads where the speed limit is no more than 50km/h and must travel at a speed of no greater than 25km/h.
If you own an e-scooter or other PMD which fits the criteria and you ride on shared pathways, you must always keep left and give way to pedestrians, oncoming bicycles and other vehicles. You must always keep a safe distance when travelling near pedestrians to avoid a collision and, as a courtesy, alert others who are in front of you before you overtake.
Any incidences should be reported to SA Police in the first instance, phone 131 444 or visit their Traffic Watch website to complete an online form (for non-urgent matters and those where no police attendance is required). If there is an emergency, phone triple zero (000).
