CORPUS CHRISTI, TX - At today's regularly scheduled City Council meeting, Mayor Paulette Guajardo and the City Council approved a resolution authorizing the Corpus Christi Parks & Recreation Department to apply for a grant from the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department (TPWD).
The $240,000 Recreational Trails Grant, with a $60,000 city match, will be used to improve the Hans & Pat Suter Wildlife Refuge.
The proposed improvements will include substantial repairs to the current asphalt trail. The existing asphalt will be removed to convert the trail to an 8-foot-wide, concrete ADA-accessible trail. The new trail will improve safety and resiliency to sustain inclement weather and enhance tourist access and recreation experience in all seasons.
"The Hans and Pat Suter Wildlife Refuge is one of Corpus Christi's most treasured natural spaces, providing a sanctuary for wildlife and a peaceful retreat for residents and visitors alike," said Mayor Paulette Guajardo. "By authorizing this grant application, the City Council is taking an important step toward enhancing recreational opportunities while preserving the refuge's ecological beauty. These improvements will strengthen our commitment to conservation, accessibility, and outdoor enjoyment for generations to come."
"Should Corpus Christi be awarded this TPWD grant, it will serve our commitment to create a wider concrete path that will make it more accessible for wheelchairs, strollers, and other mobility tools to accommodate more visitors to explore and enjoy the trail at Hans & Pat Suter Wildlife Refuge," said Tyler Florence, Assistant Director of Parks & Recreation Department.
The Hans & Pat Suter Wildlife Refuge, located at 6001 Ennis Joslin Road, is a well-known park for observing and exploring Oso Bay's diverse coastal ecosystem.
