The University of Toledo College of Medicine and Life Sciences will hold its commencement ceremony on Friday, May 15, at 2 p.m. at John F. Savage Arena, celebrating 209 students earning graduate and medical degrees.
The ceremony marks the final commencement event of UToledo's 2026 graduation season.
AAMC President Dr. David J. Skorton will deliver the College of Medicine and Life Sciences commencement address and receive an honorary degree.
Dr. David J. Skorton, president and CEO of the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC), will serve as commencement speaker and will receive an honorary Doctor of Science, honoris causa.
Skorton leads the AAMC, a nonprofit association representing medical schools, academic health systems, teaching hospitals and academic societies. He assumed the role in 2019 following a career spanning medicine, higher education and public service.
Prior to joining the AAMC, Skorton served as the 13th secretary of the Smithsonian Institution, where he oversaw 19 museums, 21 libraries, the National Zoo and numerous research centers and education programs.
Before his time at the Smithsonian, Skorton served as president of two major research universities - Cornell University and the University of Iowa - where he also spent 26 years on the faculty and co-founded and co-directed the University of Iowa Adolescent and Adult Congenital Heart Disease Clinic. A pioneer in cardiac imaging and computer processing techniques, he served as a contributor and editor-in-chief of a major text on cardiac imaging.
Since taking the helm at the AAMC, Skorton has led a comprehensive strategic planning process that established a new mission and vision for the organization, with a focus on improving health outcomes and expanding access to care for all.
Skorton holds a bachelor's degree from Northwestern University and a medical degree from Northwestern University School of Medicine. He completed his residency and cardiology fellowship, and served as chief medical resident at the University of California, Los Angeles.
For graduates and guests who are unable to attend in person, a livestream of the ceremony will be available on the commencement webpage, and recordings will also be posted for replay.
