NABET-CWA & NewsGuild-CWA Statement: State Attorneys General Act to Stop Nexstar’s Unlawful Takeover of Tegna

The National Association of Broadcast Employees and Technicians-Communications Workers of America (NABET-CWA) and The NewsGuild-CWA jointly released the following statement in response to a lawsuit in the U.S. District Court brought by the attorneys general of eight states to block Nexstar Media Group's proposed acquisition of Tegna:

A free and fair press is under threat from Nexstar Media Group's efforts to consolidate media ownership through the Tegna acquisition. Last year, Americans tasted a future under the media's consolidated corporate control when Nexstar assisted political power in censoring the speech of Jimmy Kimmel.

Our democracy cannot afford to compromise on media consolidation. The federal cap on the number of stations a single company can own is a necessary protection for a free and fair democracy.

NABET-CWA and The NewsGuild-CWA applaud the attorneys general who have rightly acted to put the First Amendment ahead of corporate interests.
