WASHINGTON, DC - Today, Congressman Marlin Stutzman (IN-03) released the following statement on the memorandum of understanding (MOU) between the United States and Iran:
"When the United States first launched an attack on Iran in February, there were three goals in mind. First, Iran must not have a nuclear weapon. Second, the Strait of Hormuz must be open for free and fair global trade. Third, Iran must stop sponsoring terrorism globally.
"Over the last 100 days, President Trump has used peace through strength and the art of the deal tactics to not only bring Iran to the table but also dismantle significant swaths of the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), decimate Iranian infrastructure, and ultimately have Iran sign an MOU that will make the United States and the world a safer place.
"The deal ends the conflict, restores fair trade in the Strait, and destroys Iran's nuclear ambitions. As President Trump said, this is 'not final,' and there will be further negotiation to reach every goal the United States is pursuing in Iran.
"We reserve the right to return to war if the deal is not followed. President Trump has never minced words about the fact that he is putting the American people first and focused on ending the evil Iran has been promoting. Anyone who sees this deal as a loss for America truly has never understood President Trump's negotiating style or love for our country.
"I look forward to seeing this and future deals play out for a safer America, a denuclearized Iran, and security physically and economically in the Middle East for our allies, especially Israel, without the division Iran inspires. Thank you, President Trump, for once again making the world a better place."
