Why Is Everyone Ignoring Expand Energy Stock’s High Cash Yield

For questions about this article or underlying research, email [email protected].

Expand Energy (EXE) generated free cash flow equal to 12.2% of its market value over the past twelve months, compared with 4.1% for the median S&P 500 company. The stock still lost 18.9% in the past year, even as the S&P 500 returned 14.9%. A yield that high marks a business on sale or one investors expect to shrink. So why has the stock fallen while the cash kept coming in? The answer starts with how Expand Energy earns that cash.

How Much Cash Does Expand Energy Make For Owners?

Expand Energy generated $2.46 billion in free cash flow over the last twelve months, representing the money left after its capital spending. Like profit, this cash belongs to shareholders whether the company pays it out or retains it. Share prices tend to track this metric when investors value a business, especially when the cash is growing.

Expand Energy sells mostly natural gas, which accounted for $10.3 billion of its $12.2 billion in fiscal 2025 revenue. Over the last twelve months, the company converted 28.0% of its sales into operating profit, up from 14.0% a year earlier. Operations brought in $5.63 billion, and capital spending consumed 56.4% of that amount.

Twelve-month free cash flow has grown rapidly. It was $1.40 billion a year earlier, and $0.25 billion the year before that.

Expand Energy also carries debt. At the end of September, its net debt, defined as debt minus cash, stood at $4.55 billion, or 22.5% of its market value. Counting that debt, free cash flow equals 9.9% of the entire company's worth, which includes its market value plus net debt. Operating profit covered interest expense 19.1 times over the last twelve months.

Why Are Investors Wary Of Expand Energy's Cash?

Investors have reason to be wary because the company itself says the gas market is weakening. In direct acknowledgment of that weakness, Expand Energy said on its October 28 call that it cut its activity from around 12 rigs to 10 entering the fourth quarter.

Free cash flow has also come off its high. The twelve-month figure peaked at $2.80 billion in the year ending March 2026 and has eased since. Expand Energy generated $337 million in fiscal Q3 2026 free cash flow, compared with $357 million in fiscal Q3 2025. The company's operating margin fell to 21.1% in fiscal Q3 2026, down from 26.3% in fiscal Q3 2025.

Meanwhile, management raised its capital investment plan for fiscal 2026 to $3.0 billion in its October 27 release, up from $2.85 billion in July. The share price appears to assume that Expand Energy will earn less cash in a softer gas market while its spending plan rises.

Management has locked in part of 2027. The company said on the call that it has already hedged 55% of its 2027 production at an average gas price of about $3.65. Management also guides its marketing business, enlarged by the Twin Eagle acquisition, to $80 million of EBITDA, a measure of operating earnings, in the fourth quarter.

What To Watch In Expand Energy's Next Results

Expand Energy's cash has not settled into a clear direction. Twelve-month free cash flow sits below its March high but remains well above its level a year earlier, and the company has raised its spending plan. Expand Energy also has to service its net debt out of that same cash.

Twelve-month free cash flow and net debt are the figures to watch when Expand Energy reports in February 2027. Those will be the first results reported under new chief executive Daniel Brown, who was on his third day in the job at the October 28 call.
