Date Announced for the Inquest into the Deaths of Zakaria Sheek Hussein and William Renwick

Dr. Louise McNaughton-Filion, Regional Supervising Coroner, East Region, Ottawa Office, announced today that a date has been scheduled for the inquest into the deaths of Zakaria Sheek Hussein and William Renwick. The inquest will begin at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, October 27, 2025. Dr. Richard Wells will be the presiding officer and Peter Napier will be the inquest counsel.

Mr. Sheek Hussein, 27 years old, died on July 24, 2021. Mr. Renwick, 49 years old, died on November 8, 2020. Both died in hospital from injuries sustained while in custody at the Ottawa-Carleton Detention Centre. An inquest into their deaths is mandatory under the Coroners Act.

The inquest will examine the circumstances surrounding their deaths. The jury may make recommendations aimed at preventing further deaths.

The inquest is expected to last four days and hear from approximately three witnesses.
