Motorists should expect significant delays crossing the Commodore Barry Bridge during the weekend of April 24-April 27. Drivers are encouraged to use alternate crossings, including the Walt Whitman Bridge, allow extra travel time, or travel during off-peak hours when possible.
Starting 9:00 p.m. Friday, April 24 through 5:00 a.m. Monday, April 27, the Commodore Barry Bridge will be reduced to one lane in each direction.
Scheduling this work continuously over the weekend allows crews to complete more work in a shorter period of time, helping to avoid longer-term lane restrictions. Multiple crews will be working at the same time to maximize productivity during the closure.
This work is scheduled during the spring to take advantage of more consistent weather conditions following the winter months and to complete critical work ahead of peak summer travel.
Speeds will be reduced through the work zone.
To safely complete this work, the center (inner) lanes must be closed, allowing multiple crews space to perform roadway repairs and access overhead equipment.
Work being performed includes:
Crews will be working around the clock through these windows to complete as much work as possible safely and efficiently.
Unlike other DRPA bridges that carry seven lanes, the Commodore Barry Bridge has five lanes total, which means any lane closure has a more noticeable impact on traffic flow.
Expect congestion, merging traffic patterns, and delays, especially during peak travel times.
The bridge is currently undergoing an extensive rehabilitation and painting project, the largest in DRPA history. As a result, lane restrictions will be part of ongoing operations over the next several years. For questions or additional information about the project, please contact the Commodore Barry Bridge Painting project hotline at 1-844-873-2663.
Updates will be shared via the DRPA website, social media channels, and travel alert system.
