Final Call: Two Ways To Grow Cary’s Tree Canopy This Fall

CARY, NC - There's still time for Cary residents to add a native tree to their property this fall through one of Cary's two tree programs - but don't wait to sign up. Registration closes September 30.

My Tree, Our Tree is back, offering Cary residents one free native tree to plant at home. Two species are still available to register: American hornbeam and overcup oak. Both are known for developing deep root systems that can help mitigate flooding, while their foliage provides valuable shade and habitat that supports wildlife. Register while supplies last and pick up your tree on October 10 at Herb Young Community Center. Reserve yours at carync.gov/mytreeourtree.

New this fall, Shading the Future takes a more targeted approach to growing Cary's tree canopy. The pilot focuses on areas with higher surface temperatures and less existing tree canopy, where strategically planted trees can provide shade, help reduce energy use, and potentially lower energy costs. Cary and our nonprofit partner, We Plant It Forward, will help participating property owners choose the right native tree and location - and plant it for you.
