Building Future-Ready Cooling: Copeland Empowers Green Data Centers in China

SUZHOU (Dec 5, 2025) - Copeland, a global leader in compression technologies and controls solutions, has partnered with Canatal to deliver advanced cooling solutions for China Mobile's Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei (Zhangjiakou) data center. By leveraging Copeland's innovative variable speed technologies, including the ZDV series variable speed scroll compressor and drives, China Mobile is able to enhance Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) and Water Usage Effectiveness (WUE) while ensuring reliable performance. This partnership highlights Copeland's dedication to driving the energy transition in the data center sector with future-ready solutions that meet China's stringent sustainability standards.

The Asia-Pacific market for data centers is expected to expand at a compound annual growth rate of 12% from 2023 to 2027 and will reach $48 billion by 2027, according to consultancy Renub Research. This is driven by 5G expansion and national initiatives like "Eastern Data, Western Computing." However, strict sustainability regulations, particularly PUE and WUE requirements, pose significant challenges for data center operations. Aligned with national sustainability strategies, China Mobile targeted a PUE below 1.25 and a WUE below 0.2 for its new data center. Situated in the cold, arid northern region, the Zhangjiakou facility faces significant water scarcity, making traditional water-cooled systems impractical due to their high water consumption and costs, further complicating efforts to meet these demands.

To address the challenges of meeting strict energy and water efficiency requirements, advancing the annual energy efficiency ratio (AEER) and keeping stability and precise temperature control for the safe and uninterrupted operation of the data center, Canatal selected Copeland's variable speed solution for its ECS integrated fluorinated pump energy-saving air conditioner. The solution features Copeland's advanced ZDV098 variable speed scroll compressor, engineered for continuous operation with a wide operating envelope under high and low loads. The optimized scroll design and variable compression ratio (VCR) technology effectively enhance energy efficiency, while the low-pressure chamber improves liquid impact resistance, ensuring greater reliability.

Copeland's advanced variable speed technology further enables precise energy management by calculating cooling capacity, power and energy efficiency, supporting energy savings and reducing water consumption for the project.

Since its installation in 2024, the solution has reduced operational costs and exceeded customer expectations, not only meeting the PUE and WUE requirements but also achieving an exceptional AEER of up to 12.5 W/W*. Additionally, the solution incorporates a heat recovery module, which captures waste heat for heating purposes, further enhancing energy efficiency and reducing carbon emissions.

"This project underscores our dedication to advancing energy-efficient technologies that address critical challenges in the data center industry in China," said Galen Yin, vice president of China for Copeland. "We have demonstrated how our tailored, innovative solutions not only meet the unique needs of data centers but also drive sustainability by optimizing energy consumption, reducing carbon footprints and ensuring operational excellence."

Throughout the project, Copeland's technical team provided Canatal with technical support, including simulation calculations and model selection. Canatal stated, "Copeland's equipment and solutions have a proven reputation for excellence in data center cooling and are highly recognized within the industry, making them our trusted choice when planning solutions for our users."

With more than a century of expertise and innovation, Copeland will continue to leverage its vast engineering resources and experience to address the data center market's most pressing cooling challenges, leading the way in sustainable compression technologies and controls solutions for data centers in China and beyond.
