Intersection at Civic Center Drive, Redwood Highway to be open for traffic

Marin County - Caltrans is scheduled to open the Manuel T. Freitas Roundabout as well as the intersection of Civic Center Drive and Redwood Highway on the morning of Monday, June 8. The intersection has been closed since February to necessitate the construction of the roundabout, a new bus stop and northbound slip on-ramp.

After the roundabout is open, some work adjacent to the area will include drainage improvements, reconstruction of the island, and grind-and-pave activities. During this construction, traffic will not be able to make a left turn from Freitas Parkway into the roundabout. The access is expected to reopen around mid-June.

This project is expected to improve the intersection of Freitas Parkway, Civic Center Drive, and Old Redwood Highway with the roundabout. This change is expected to improve traffic flow and make this busy intersection/off-ramp safer for vehicles and pedestrians.

Caltrans worked to relocate the bus stop at the northbound Freitas Parkway off-ramp to make it safer and Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) accessible.

The project is being coordinated with Golden Gate Transit (GGT) and the City of San Rafael for bus stop relocation/ improvements in the City's Right of Way.

The Advantages of a Roundabout

  • Reduced congestion at intersection and an improved level of service.
  • Reduced rates and severity of crashes due to fewer conflict points and lower traveling speed.
  • Provides improved access for both pedestrians and bicyclists.

The modern roundabout is an intersection with a circular configuration that safely and efficiently moves traffic. Major roundabout projects have been built in other North Bay counties like Sonoma and Napa in recent years. Roundabouts feature channelized, curved approaches that reduce vehicle speed, entry yield control that gives right-of way to circulating traffic, and counterclockwise flow around a central island that minimizes conflict points. The net result of lower speeds and reduced conflicts at roundabouts is an environment where collisions that cause injury or fatality are substantially reduced. - Courtesy of the Federal Highway Administration.

All work is dependent on weather and other factors.
