AFSC Colorado / Jordan Garcia
Today the Supreme Court issued rulings on asylum and Temporary Protected Status (TPS) that will have a devastating impact on immigrants, people seeking protection, and our communities as a whole.
In Mullin v. Al Otra Lado, the Supreme Court ruled to uphold the federal government's policy of turning away people seeking asylum when they present themselves at ports of entry. This ruling will cause significant harm to individuals and families fleeing violence and is in direct violation of constitutional protections and U.S. obligations under international law.
In Mullin v. Doe, the court ruled that the Trump administration can end TPS for immigrants from Syria and Haiti. This devastating decision puts more than 350,000 Haitian and 6,000 Syrians at risk of deportation and threatens the status of all TPS holders. People with TPS have lived in the U.S. for years, sometimes decades and are essential members of our communities.
These rulings will tear apart families and neighborhoods, put people in dangerous situations, and significantly expand the Trump Administration's racist mass deportation agenda. AFSC has been organizing with TPS holders and asylum seekers for years. These rulings will harm our friends, family members, and colleagues. The courts have failed us, but the struggle is not over. We will continue to protest, organize, agitate, and advocate to stop detention and deportation and demand a pathway to citizenship for all.
