Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Secretary of the Central Political and Legal Affairs Commission of the CPC Chen Wenqing will attend the 14th International Meeting of High Representatives for Security Issues in Russia and Visit Russia and Kazakhstan upon invitation from May 27 to June 1.
People's Daily: Yesterday, Foreign Minister Wang Yi presided over a Security Council high-level meeting at the UN headquarters in New York, with the participation of UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and representatives from over 100 countries. Can you share more details?
Mao Ning: The current international situation is undergoing the most complex and profound changes since WWII. With the purposes of the UN Charter being disregarded and the basic norms of international relations being disrupted, world peace and security are in great jeopardy. As the rotating president of the UN Security Council for May, China initiated the high-level meeting on the theme of "Upholding the Purposes and Principles of the UN Charter and Strengthening the UN-centered International System." Representatives from over 100 countries, including foreign ministers and senior representatives from over 20 countries have participated in the meeting to renew the founding mission of the UN. After lively and deep-going discussions, important common understandings have been reached.
Foreign Minister Wang Yi put forward five propositions, namely, we must revitalize the UN Charter, the authority of the UN Security Council, the international cooperation on development, the platforms for global governance, and the efficacy of the UN system. It is a strong call for upholding, reinvigorating and strengthening the UN. As such, it demonstrates China's firm support for multilateralism and is therefore welcomed by various parties.
This year, we celebrate the 55th anniversary of the restoration of the new China's lawful seat in the UN. Over the past 55 years, as the permanent member of the UN Security Council, China has been actively participating in and advancing the cause of the UN. At the new historical starting point, China will continue doing more things for greater good, championing multilateralism and pursuing greater solidarity to build a more just and equitable global governance system and move towards the goal of building a community with a shared future for humanity.
Prensa Latina: Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez denounced the escalation of U.S. military threats against Cuba at the UN Security Council and called for international solidarity with the island as well as strict respect for the UN Charter. Given that these statements were made during a meeting chaired by China, what are your comments?
Mao Ning: China always advocates respecting countries' sovereignty and territorial integrity, opposes the use or threat of force in international relations, and opposes violation of other countries' sovereignty and interference in other countries' internal affairs under any pretext. All countries should observe international law and the purposes and principles of the UN Charter. China firmly supports Cuba in safeguarding its sovereignty, security and development interests.
EFE: Panama said after Wang Yi's meeting with Foreign Minister Javier Martínez-Acha that both sides discussed advancing technical maritime cooperation and strengthening dialogue. Can the Foreign Ministry provide more details on the outcomes of the meeting and what specific areas of maritime cooperation were discussed?
Mao Ning: The readout about the meeting between Foreign Minister Wang Yi and the Panamanian foreign minister in New York has been released. I have no more information to add.
Phoenix TV: The Shenzhou-23 crewed spaceship was successfully launched on Sunday. The crew, already in China's space station now, includes a payload specialist from Hong Kong for the first time, drawing global attention. What is your comment?
Mao Ning: With the successful launch of Shenzhou-23 spacecraft, Tiangong space station now has its first ever astronaut from Hong Kong, China. This is not only a new milestone in China's manned space program, but also the glory for all Hong Kong compatriots. It is a result of One Country, Two Systems and testament to its extraordinary strength and vitality.
Hong Kong is on track to become an international innovation and tech hub. The space mission will inspire more young people there to be part of China's scientific and technological advancement.
Reuters: A 68-year-old Chinese man has been detained in South Korea after arriving in a western coastal county of the country via a rubber boat. His arrival was on Monday late. The New York Times is reporting that this person has sought to leave China previously too but was always sent back. Has the Korean authorities reached out to China about this case? Is China seeking to repatriate him?
Mao Ning: I'm not familiar with that.
Reuters: Is China sending or has China sent any cave-diving experts to join the rescue efforts in Laos to help extract the seven people trapped in a cave that became flooded after they went in search for gold there?
Mao Ning: Based on initial information we have at the moment, those trapped are not employees of Chinese companies. We are concerned for their safety and wish them out of danger soon.
AFP: The United States, India, Japan and Australia, members of what is called the Quad, expressed their concern yesterday over the situation in the East China Sea and the South China Sea. They did not explicitly name China but the remarks were clearly aimed at China. Has China lodged any protests with these countries?
Mao Ning: The situation in the East China Sea and the South China Sea is generally stable. Certain countries should stop meddling in maritime affairs in China's neighborhood and earnestly respect regional countries' efforts to safeguard peace and stability. Those who attempt to patch up small groupings, hype up tensions and stoke confrontation will find no support.
