Fall is in the air. It's good to have some rain! Here at the City of Portland we are honored to serve this wonderful community of folks who work hard, raise families, look out for one another, and stand up for their values.
We are investing in Portland and delivering key services to Portlanders every hour of every day.
We love you, Portland. Show up. Stay strong. Never forget who you are.
The Portland Bureau of Transportation is busy improving roads, bike lanes and sidewalks to help folks walk, bike, roll, and drive safely and accessibly. This includes our kiddos who rely on transportation to get to school everyday. Even our fire department gets in on the fun from time to time, escorting kids safely to school.
Portland is proud to have the best water in the world, thanks to the skilled crews who complete nearly 4,000 projects every year to upgrade our pipes and keep our water system healthy. The numbers are impressive. 2,250 miles of pipes. 54 tanks and covered reservoirs. Enough water to fill up 144 Olympic-size swimming pools every single day. Altogether we deliver around 30 billion gallons of water to nearly 1 million people year in, year out.
Portland Parks & Recreation maintains more than 156 parks spanning 12,000 acres - including 62 community gardens, 137 playgrounds, 218 basketball hoops, 28 splash pads, and 158 miles of trails. Those parks are an irreplaceable resource for the hundreds of thousands of residents who rely on them for learning, play, relaxing, and recharging. Park rangers like Andres Lucas-Robles are in the field every day. Trained in de-escalation, first-aid, and communication, they provide a positive presence in the parks, resolving issues like aggressive behavior, vandalism, drinking, drugs, and off-leash dogs so people can have fun, stay safe, and build community.
The Bureau of Environmental Services -- Portland's sewer and stormwater utility -- operates 2,500 miles of sewer pipes, nearly 100 pump stations, thousands of green streets, and two treatment plants. We just finished construction on the Springwater Wetland Enhancement Project. This restoration project connects community with nature, reduces local flooding, improves wildlife habitat and naturally manages stormwater in the Johnson Creek watershed.
