Robert Ledoux named UNM QNM-I director

The University of New Mexico announces a significant addition to its academic leadership with the appointment of Robert "Bob" Ledoux as the new director of the Quantum New Mexico Institute (QNM-I).

Robert "Bob" Ledoux

"Bob has a wealth of experience across multiple sectors and a truly visionary approach that will only continue to drive the QNM-I toward new heights," UNM Vice President for Research Ellen Fisher said. "The University, its stakeholders, industry partners, and so many leaders across the State of New Mexico are rallying behind the advancement of quantum science. UNM must be at the forefront of this charge, and with Bob leading QNM-I, I am confident that we are poised for remarkable success."

In 2024, the category 3 interdisciplinary research center was created and marks a significant milestone in joint efforts between UNM, Sandia National Laboratories, and Los Alamos National Laboratory. It was established after decades of commitment to cutting-edge research and innovation in the field of quantum science. The institute has secured more than $4 million in direct funding in the last two years and has teamed up with ecosystem partners to seek $25 million in quantum funding from the New Mexico Economic Development Department.

In addition to being a major partner in the Elevate Quantum Tech Hub that secured more than $40 million from the U.S. Economic Development Administration, QNM-I also obtained $84 million in support from Colorado and New Mexico. This leadership change marks a promising chapter for the institute and the broader academic community, as it continues to explore the vast potentials of quantum science.

"It's a tremendous honor to join The University of New Mexico and lead the Quantum New Mexico Institute at such a pivotal moment for quantum science-a truly transformative technology for this century," Ledoux said. "QNM-I brings together a powerful combination of academic excellence, cutting-edge national lab research, commercial partnerships, and strong statewide support."

Ledoux comes to UNM after serving as program director at the Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E). He oversaw several programs, including the ARPA-E ONWARDS program, which aims to reduce the disposal impact of advanced reactor waste, INTERMODAL, which models resiliency and decarbonization pathways for intermodal freight, and the LENR study of low-energy nuclear interactions for possible use as an energy source. During his tenure at ARPA-E, Ledoux also made remarkable strides in the development of the QC3 program, a groundbreaking initiative designed to propel quantum computing software into new realms of possibility, particularly within the fields of chemistry and materials science.

Prior to joining ARPA-E, Ledoux served as CEO and founder of Passport Systems, a pioneering technology company specializing in non-intrusive cargo inspection. Ledoux was responsible for co-inventing new technologies with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Domestic Nuclear Detection Office to aid in the non-intrusive inspection of cargo. He has also co-authored more than 20 U.S. and international patents.

"Throughout my career-from high-energy nuclear physics to commercial innovation, national security, and federal leadership in energy research-the need for powerful new tools to simulate quantum systems has been both central and paramount," Ledoux said. "From system optimization to materials discovery and advanced sensing, quantum technologies are poised to transform disciplines I've been deeply engaged with for decades. QNM-I offers a unique chance to bring together my experience and the many perspectives of our partners in pursuit of a bold, shared vision for quantum research and workforce development."

In 1981, Ledoux received his doctorate in experimental nuclear physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and brings with him more than 30 years of professional and entrepreneurial experience. Ledoux says he's ready for the journey ahead and ready to answer the state question as soon as he arrives!

"New Mexico has always captured my imagination with its deep scientific heritage, stunning landscapes, and vibrant culture," he said. "I can't wait to spend time hiking the landscapes, exploring the open road on my motorcycle, and enriching my understanding and curiosity of the vibrant arts scene. And of course, I can't wait to dive into the local cuisine-red or green? I'll happily find out!"

Ledoux will step into the role on Aug.1, 2025.
