KPN has now provided two-thirds of the Netherlands with a super-fast and future-proof fiber connection. The telecom provider announced this today during the presentation of its half-year figures. Together with its joint venture Glaspoort, KPN is replacing the copper network with fiber. A large majority of all KPN customers have now switched to fiber internet free of charge, giving them access to the highest internet speeds and a stable connection. This means that millions of households and businesses can benefit from reliable internet for working from home, streaming, and other digital applications.
KPN is investing heavily in the fiber rollout using its own resources. Annually, KPN invests an average of nearly €600 million in fiber installation and, consequently, in the Netherlands' digital infrastructure. This provides households and businesses with the best possible access to digital services. Besides superfast internet, KPN's fiber network enables efficiency gains, the use of innovative technologies, and the further development of the digital society. KPN expects that by 2026, approximately 80 percent of all Dutch households will have access to fiber, making the Netherlands one of the best-connected countries in Europe.
KPN CEO Joost Farwerck commented on this today during the presentation of the first-half figures: "We remain the leader in the Dutch fiber market. Together with our joint venture Glaspoort, we now cover two-thirds of the Netherlands and are making steady progress in connecting homes and activating new fiber lines. Reliable and secure connectivity is central to our strategy, and with this, KPN makes a significant contribution to the digital resilience of the Netherlands."
KPN is currently working in nearly 250 cities, towns, and business parks to provide fiber internet to all residents and businesses. A key advantage of fiber internet over other networks is that the internet connection offers symmetrical speeds: uploading is just as fast as downloading. This is a major difference from coaxial networks, where upload speeds are often significantly slower than download speeds. Symmetrical speeds are increasingly important in today's digital society, for example, for video calling, sharing large files, cloud storage, and gaming. Not only does this allow households to work and study faster and more efficiently, but businesses also benefit from smooth and reliable data exchange. Fiber internet ensures that everyone can optimally participate in the digital life of today and tomorrow.
