State of the Union 2025

In June 2024, nearly 200 million Europeans voted in the European elections - the highest turnout in 20 years. This showed that citizens care about the EU and want it to deliver on today's biggest challenges: peace and security in light of Russia's war against Ukraine, the rising cost of living, energy and housing pressures, climate change, and global competition in new technologies.

Since December 2024, the new European Commission has focused on making Europe stronger and more resilient. It is boosting the economy, investing in skills and housing, ensuring affordable energy, and supporting innovation in areas like clean tech and artificial intelligence (AI). At the same time, the EU is deepening global partnerships, taking more responsibility for its own defence, and standing firmly with Ukraine. Looking ahead, a modernised EU budget from 2028 will provide the flexibility and ambition needed to face future crises. Europe's strength lies in unity - and together, it can rise to today's challenges.
