Egypt Reinforces Media Standards Under Press and Media Law

Egypt has reaffirmed its regulatory framework governing media practices under Law No. 180 of 2018, setting out the responsibilities and ethical obligations of journalists and media professionals across the country.

The legislation outlines clear expectations for media practitioners, requiring them to uphold the principles and values enshrined in the Constitution while adhering to professional codes of ethics and the editorial policies of their respective organisations. At its core, the law emphasises the importance of responsible journalism that respects the rights and freedoms of individuals and maintains the integrity of the media landscape.

In addition to defining professional conduct, the law establishes accountability mechanisms for violations. Journalists and media professionals who fail to meet these standards may face disciplinary action through their respective syndicates, alongside internal measures imposed by media institutions. This dual-layered approach reinforces both professional and organisational responsibility within the sector.

A key provision of the law prohibits the publication or broadcast of false information, as well as content that may incite violence, hatred, or discrimination. It also restricts material that promotes racism, defamation, or insults against individuals and religious beliefs. Notably, these regulations extend beyond traditional media outlets to include personal websites, blogs, and social media accounts with more than 5,000 followers, reflecting the evolving nature of content creation and distribution.

The Supreme Council for Media Regulation is tasked with overseeing compliance and is empowered to take appropriate action in cases of violation. This includes the authority to suspend or block platforms that breach the law, while ensuring that affected parties retain the right to appeal such decisions through the Administrative Court.

As media ecosystems continue to evolve, Egypt's regulatory framework highlights an ongoing effort to balance freedom of expression with accountability, ensuring that media content remains responsible, credible, and aligned with broader societal values.
