CTDOT Plans to Replace Traffic Control Signal Equipment in Eastern Connecticut

The Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) is developing plans under State Project No. 0172-0560 to replace existing traffic control signal equipment in Brooklyn, Chaplin, Groton, Killingly, Old Saybrook, & Westbrook.

The project involves full replacements of the traffic signal equipment at twelve intersections, and pedestrian upgrades at two intersections. At applicable locations, pedestrian control features (countdown pedestrian indications, accessible pushbuttons, sidewalk ramps) will be upgraded in an effort to improve accessibility and pedestrian safety. CTDOT will coordinate with the cities/towns during the design phase. The following intersections are included:

Traffic Control Signal - Full Replacement Intersections:

  • U.S. Route 6 (Providence Road) at Shopping Center Drive in Brooklyn
  • U.S. Route 6 (Providence Road) at Tiffany Street Connector in Brooklyn
  • U.S. Route 6 (Willimantic Road & Hampton Road) at Route 198 (Phoenixville Road) & Chewink Road in Chaplin
  • Route 12 at Gungywamp Road & Lafayette Drive in Groton
  • Route 12 (Main St.) at Water St. in Killingly
  • U.S. Route 6 (Providence Pike) at Maple St. in Killingly
  • U.S. Route 6 (Providence Pike) at Route 12 (Main Street) in Killingly
  • U.S. Route 1 (Boston Post Road) at Donnelly Road in Old Saybrook
  • U.S. Route 1 (Boston Post Road) at Ingham Hill Road & Old Post Road in Old Saybrook
  • U.S. Route 1 (Boston Post Road & Oyster River) at Route 154 (Old Boston Post Road) in Old Saybrook
  • U.S. Route 1 (Boston Post Road) at School House Road & Old Post Road in Old Saybrook
  • U.S. Route 1 (Boston Post Road) at Salt Island Road & Trolly Road in Westbrook

Traffic Control Signal - Partial Replacement (Pedestrian Upgrade) Intersections:

  • U.S. Route 6 (Providence Road) at South Main Street & Shopping Plaza Drive in Brooklyn
  • U.S. Route 6 (Providence Road) at Route 12 (Wauregan Road) & Dyer Street in Killingly

The present schedule indicates that the design will be completed in March of 2028, with construction anticipated to start in fall of 2028, assuming acceptance of the project, availability of funding and receipt of any required right-of-way and environmental permits. This project will be undertaken with 20% federal and 80% state funds.
