Tegucigalpa, September 02, 2025 - The Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI) obtained LEED® BD+C: NC v4 Gold certification for its Building II in Honduras, awarded by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). This international recognition reaffirms the Bank's commitment to energy efficiency, innovation, and environmental protection, consolidating its position as a benchmark for responsible construction in Honduras.
With a surface area of 12,731 m², the building incorporates advanced sustainability strategies into its design: a high-performance envelope, efficient lighting and air conditioning systems, use of renewable energy, integration of charging stations for electric vehicles, monitoring of indoor air quality, reduction of water consumption, and selection of environmentally friendly materials.
During construction, environmental pollution control practices were implemented, and responsible waste management procedures were followed, prioritizing recycling and reuse, which significantly reduced the amount of waste sent to the municipal landfill. In addition, to ensure the permanence of these achievements, sustainable operation and maintenance plans were developed, an advanced cleaning system was implemented, and an environmental education program was developed for building users and visitors.
Some of the main achievements include an 18% reduction in energy demand, thanks to the building's optimized design; 28% of energy generated on site through photovoltaic systems; more than 41% total savings in electricity consumption; a 40% reduction in indoor water consumption; and more than 80% of construction waste reused or recycled.
This certification reinforces the Bank's commitment to its Corporate Environmental and Social Responsibility System (SASC), which ensures that all its facilities operate sustainably. It also complements ISO 14001:2015 in Environmental Management, in force at CABEI offices in Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Guatemala, and Costa Rica, and LEED certification in Operation and Maintenance in El Salvador and LEED in Design and Construction in Nicaragua, both at the Gold level, thus consolidating its regional leadership in innovation, efficiency, and good environmental practices.
