Saturday, April 4, over 60 community members gathered at Harrison Park to celebrate the arrival of spring. The planting took place in Montavilla, which has a tree canopy coverage percentage of 19. In addition to low canopy coverage, Harrison Park in recent years has lost several large, mature trees. In response, APANO and Friends of Harrison Park led the charge to host an event to regreen the park through tree planting and nature patch stewardship.
We added 11 new trees to the park and gave the nature patch some much needed care. Along with the planting and stewardship work, several partners provided resources for volunteers and curious neighbors. Friends of Trees brought 60 free fruit trees to giveaway to community members. Portland Fruit Tree Project tabled sharing resources about their programs. And, the Read in Color mobile library brought free books to share while APANO also tabled and provided materials for cyanotype art.
We even had special visits from Metro Councilor Duncan Hwang and State Senator Khanh Pham who shared a few words about their projects and goals for an affordable, sustainable, and connected Jade District.
No good event is complete without great food, and we had plenty. APANO and Urban Forestry provided treats from Li Min's bakery and banh mis from Best Baguette. We are so grateful to all who came by to planting, connect, and learn with us. We hope these new trees will thrive and provide many benefits to the community.
