Construction is progressing to transform the 100-year-old Dwight Murphy Field into a modern, inclusive recreation space designed to serve a broad range of users. As of October, the Dwight Murphy Field Renovation Project reached 25% completion.
Since construction began in June at the 10-acre site, crews have made steady progress transforming the park in preparation for its new amenities. Work completed to date includes:
As part of the early construction phase, crews began a phased soil remediation process and took additional soil stabilization measures after encountering higher-than-anticipated groundwater levels.
Over the coming months, work will continue on underground utilities, drainage, and foundation systems before vertical construction begins on new park amenities.
The renovated park will feature Santa Barbara's first all-abilities playground, Gwendolyn's Playground, which will include a multi-story treehouse, hill slides, inclusive swings, musical play elements, and a calming pod. A new multi-sport field, sized to accommodate youth and adult soccer, rugby, and lacrosse, will feature defined areas on the sidelines for players and spectators, as well as improved sports lighting. Additional park improvements include an expanded outdoor fitness area, a large turf area for drop-in activities and picnics, a shaded group picnic area, new restrooms, new walking paths with lighting, and increased parking.
The project remains on schedule, and the park is expected to reopen in Spring 2027.
