Two-factor authentication mandatory for access to ERS OnLine

2-minute read

In February, the Employees Retirement System of Texas (ERS) improved security measures by requiring two-factor authentication (2FA) for all ERS OnLine accounts. The security method means you'll use two verification steps when logging in to your account. Not only will you provide a username and email password, but also either an email address or cell phone number to get access to your ERS OnLine account. This makes your account extra secure! (You may have already set this up for your account, as it has been an option since May.)

How does it work?

If this sounds familiar, it's because other websites and apps you may have used also use 2FA or multi-factor authentication. ERS' 2FA process is similar to those.

What do you need to do from here?

Enrollment is automatic for all user accounts. Please be sure you have an up-to-date email address or cell phone number saved in your ERS OnLine account.

Updating these will update your ERS OnLine contact information; it's not just a temporary contact for 2FA. How to add or update your email address:

  1. Click "My Account Login" located at the top-right of the ERS webpage.
  2. Click "Proceed to login."
  3. Click the "Email Address and Password" link from the homepage.
  4. Add your email address or update the current email address if needed.
  5. Click "Save."

How to add or update your cell phone number:

Log in to your account and click the "Phone Numbers" link from the homepage. Follow the steps below:

To update the cell phone number: To add a cell phone number:
Replace old number with correct number and Click "Save"
  1. Click "Add a Phone Number" and choose "Cellular" from the Phone Type drop-down.
  2. Enter cellular phone number in the telephone box and click "Save."

Follow these steps each time you log in to your ERS OnLine account:

  1. Log in to ERS OnLine with your username and password.
  2. Request a code be sent to your email address or cell number at the prompt.
  3. If you chose email as your delivery option, check your inbox for a message from "donotreply@ers.texas.gov." If you chose cell number as your delivery option, check your SMS messaging app for a message from (855) 542-1424.
  4. Enter the six-digit code from the message.
  5. Click "Submit."
  6. Proceed with your activity in the system once you see the ERS OnLine homepage.

Note: You must complete Steps 3-5 within 10 minutes of requesting the code. The code will expire after 10 minutes, and you will have to repeat the steps to get a new code.
