Syracuse Mayor Sharon F. Owens announced the appointment of Meghan Vitale as the Vision Zero Coordinator, within the Department of Public Works. The role coordinates the ongoing efforts to become a Vision Zero City and eliminate traffic fatalities and serious injuries while improving safety for all road users.
Vitale will join the DPW transportation planning team with the task of leading the City's Vision Zero efforts, overseeing targeted safety planning initiatives, supporting the design, and implementation of projects and advise City leadership and local boards on Vision Zero strategies. She will coordinate across City departments and consultant teams to pursue grant funding for transportation safety projects and lead public engagement efforts to ensure community feedback in future projects.
Vitale brings more than 20 years of transportation planning and engineering experience to the role. She most recently served as Principal Transportation Planner at the Syracuse Metropolitan Transportation Council (SMTC), where she managed multiple regional transportation studies, maintained the region's 25-year Metropolitan Transportation Plan and led public engagement initiatives. She analyzed Census and traffic data, translated complex technical findings into clear public-facing materials and worked closely with municipal and agency stakeholders.
Vitale holds a master's degree in urban planning and policy from the University of Illinois at Chicago and a bachelor's degree in civil engineering from Clarkson University.
