WSU neuroscience students earn scholarship in memory of late WSU alumnus

Three Washington State University neuroscience students - Valentina Iturbe Fuentes, Karenna Meyermann, and Maya Nash - have been awarded the Peter A. Zornes Memorial Scholarship for their commitment and outstanding achievements in WSU's neuroscience program.

The scholarship carries forward the legacy of Peter A. Zornes, a former and late WSU student whose passion for neuroscience and aspirations in medicine continue to inspire recipients. It is presented through WSU's Integrative Physiology and Neuroscience program and honors academic excellence, research engagement, and a commitment to advancing the field of neuroscience.

"I am truly grateful to have been chosen to receive this scholarship, and I hope to carry on Peter's legacy and love for neuroscience and inspire future neuroscience students whether at or beyond WSU," Meyermann said.

Meyermann plans to attend medical school after WSU, with interests in neurology, neurocritical care, and allergy and immunology.

The scholarship honors academic excellence, research engagement, and a commitment to advancing the field of neuroscience.

She expressed deep appreciation for the Zornes family and the opportunity to carry forward Peter's legacy. She said the scholarship and annual ceremony also provided her the opportunity to connect with other students who share her passion for neuroscience and medicine.

"Neuroscience is my greatest passion, and I love learning everything and anything about it and passing on that love to others. I knew Peter had a similar passion for neuroscience, and was hoping to become a physician, a dream I also share."

For Nash, the scholarship supports a clear future in research. She plans to pursue a PhD in neuroscience and eventually serve as a principal investigator and professor, leading research focused on the neuronal circuitry involved in drugs of abuse. Nash is also completing a minor in psychology, along with certifications in the Honors College, including MESI and global leadership.

"I remember hearing Mrs. Zornes speak about her son and the importance of this award," said Nash, who attended last year's Zornes scholarship ceremony. "The traits she described were ones I felt I embodied, and the community she has built is something I wanted to be part of."

These three recipients reflect the breadth of talent and dedication within WSU's neuroscience community, carrying forward both scientific curiosity and the spirit of the scholarship's namesake.

Peter's memorial scholarship is funded in part by the annual Peter Zornes Memorial Golf Tournament, held every summer at the Colfax Golf Course and Country Club in Colfax, Washington. This year's tournament is July 11, 2026.
