FEMA Makes $13.3 Million Available for Pre-Disaster Mitigation for Flood, Earthquake and Wildfire Resilience Projects to the states of Alaska and Washington, and Chilkat Indian[...]

BOTHELL, Wash. - Today, FEMA announced that federal funding for hazard mitigation projects is available to the states of Alaska and Washington, and the Chilkat Indian Village to address flood, earthquake and wildfire risks. This funding will empower states and one Tribal Nation to take decisive, proactive steps to protect their communities from future disasters.

Congress authorized these 10 named projects through the Fiscal Year 2026 Homeland Security and Further Additional Continuing Appropriations Act. Funding for these projects has been made available through FEMA's Pre-Disaster Mitigation grant program. Nationwide, 40 states and the Chilkat Indian Village, are expected to receive more than $189 million in federal funding for 125 projects.

In FEMA Region 10, identified projects include:

Alaska

  • $3.2 million for the Glacial Lake Outburst Flood Disaster Mitigation--Flood Resilience on the Mendenhall River project in the City and Borough of Juneau.
  • $2 million for the Mat-Su Revetment and Road Upgrades project in Matanuska-Susitna Borough.
  • $375,000 for the Planning & Design of Salt Lagoon and Community Pond Flood Mitigation project in the City of Saint Paul.
  • $1.2 to the Chilkat Indian Village for the Klukwan Landslide Protection Project.

Washington

  • $1.1 million for the Northwest Service Area Grid Resiliency project in Cowlitz County Public Utility District
  • $1.1 million for the Jorstad Substation Grid Resilience Project in Mason County PUD No. 1.
  • $1.1 million for the Southern End Erosion Project to the City of Ocean Shores.
  • $1.1 million for the Well 9 Seismic Resiliency Water Transmission Main Design project to the Sammamish Plateau Water and Sewer District.
  • $1.1 million for the Seattle Waterfront Elliott Bay Sewall Project, Phase 2 to the City of Seattle.
  • $1.1 million for the Seattle Public Library Columbia Branch Seismic Structural Upgrade project to the City of Seattle.

Before funds are awarded, these communities must submit an application by July 22, 2026, by 5 p.m. Eastern Time. FEMA will review all applications and disburse funding only after confirming that eligibility criteria have been met.
