Board of Commissioners Tours Redevelopment Progress at Kenilworth Courts

August 28, 2025 4:10 PM

Members of the DC Housing Authority (DCHA) Board of Commissioners recently toured the first completed phase of redevelopment at Kenilworth Courts and got an up-close look at how the community is being transformed for current and future residents.

Board Chairman Raymond Skinner and Board Member Leroy Clay joined DCHA staff to view the redevelopment progress at the multigenerational community in the historic Kenilworth neighborhood.

The first phase of redevelopment, known as K166, was completed last fall and delivered 166 new affordable units. Of those, at least 101 are reserved for returning residents, ensuring that long-standing families can remain rooted in their community. The units range from three- to five-bedroom homes, offering more space for families of different sizes. The redeveloped site also features an array of amenities, including a fitness center, recreation room, fresh foods market, and on-site support services.

Originally built in the 1950s, Kenilworth Courts has long been a fixture of Northeast Washington, D.C. Today, the Kenilworth Courts community includes family-sized homes and apartments in a transit-friendly neighborhood that is adjacent to the vibrant Kenilworth Park and Aquatic Gardens, a 700-acre national park with riverwalk trails, ballfields, and recreational facilities.

Future phases of redevelopment at Kenilworth Courts are anticipated to provide more than 300 newly constructed, affordable homes across three multifamily buildings, townhomes, and stacked flats, further expanding affordable housing opportunities for families in The District.

The Kenilworth Courts redevelopment is part of the New Communities Initiative (NCI), a DC government program dedicated to transforming distressed public housing into vibrant, mixed-income neighborhoods. This ambitious effort is made possible through partnerships with the Deputy Mayor's Office for Planning and Economic Development (DMPED), the DC Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD), the DC Housing Finance Agency (DCHFA), and Truist Bank.
