Governor Polis Celebrates Colorado as Home to Three of the World's Top 400 Universities

DENVER - Today, Governor Polis celebrated Colorado institutions of higher education for being recognized among the top 400 universities in the world according to US News and World Report. University of Colorado Boulder (No. 105), University of Colorado Anschutz (No. 193), and Colorado State University (No. 347).

Colorado's 6 million people mean that we have .07% of the global population, and with three of 400 top universities, Colorado is home to .75% of the top universities, more than ten times the expected amount of top universities based on our population.

"Colorado is a leader nationally in higher education, and I am thrilled to see Colorado universities being recognized on the world stage. Education is our top priority in Colorado, from early childhood education, after school initiatives, apprenticeships and more we are now creating a more streamlined that better supports students, educators and families throughout their academic journey. Colorado is #1 in education and we look forward to building on our successes to expand educational opportunities, grow our economy, and support the workforce needed to fill the jobs of the future, and our 3 universities in the top 400 globally is part of how we can increase opportunities for learners." said Governor Polis.

Earlier this week, Governor Polis celebrated Colorado being named #1 in education by US News and World Report, rising from the No. 3 spot in 2025 to the No. 1 spot in 2026.

"This recognition reflects the exceptional work happening at Colorado's public universities and the faculty, researchers, staff and students who drive innovation every day. Having three Colorado institutions ranked among the world's top universities reinforces our state's reputation as a leader in higher education, research and workforce development. These institutions are preparing students for success while generating discoveries that strengthen Colorado's economy and improve lives across the globe," said Colorado Department of Higher Education Executive Director JB Holston.

"To have three Colorado research universities ranked among the 400 best in the world highlights the importance of our state's continued investment in its campuses and classrooms. We're proud to have earned this honor. It's also notable that US higher education dominates the rankings overall - a fact that has contributed enormously to our nation's scientific and economic strength for the last century," said Colorado State University Chancellor Tony Frank.
