As part of the Southwestern Undergraduate Research with Faculty (SURF) program, kinesiology majors Elaine Bentley '27, Johannes Becker '27, and Kaden Jones '27 spent their summer working alongside Professor of Kinesiology Scott McLean to study how hand kinetics change among freestyle stroke swimmers as their speed increases. Using a wireless 3D transducer to measure hand force and a contactless swim pacing system to control swimmers' speed, the group was able to collect and analyze data demonstrating how hand movements change based on swim speed. The students aim to present their findings at the International Society of Biomechanics in Sports conference next summer in the United Kingdom.
