The event, organized by the Legal Advisor's Office of the Foreign Ministry in collaboration with the International Law Students Association and the law firm Galicia, took place from February 23 to 27.
A total of 11 universities from Aguascalientes, Mexico City, Coahuila, Jalisco, and Tabasco competed. The Jessup competition, which simulates proceedings at the International Court of Justice, promotes the study and practice of international law and the peaceful settlement of international disputes. It also provides a platform for training highly specialized international lawyers.
This year's hypothetical case addressed issues including the rights of Indigenous peoples and natural resources; the meaning of general principles of law; and the jurisdictional immunity of state-owned entities in the courts of other States, among other topics.
In the final round, Universidad Panamericana, Aguascalientes Campus was awarded the national title and will have the honor of representing Mexico in the international rounds of the competition, to be held from March 28 to April 4 in Washington, D.C.
The judges for the national final were Pablo Arrocha Olabuenaga, Legal Adviser of the Foreign Ministry, and international law professors Virginia Petrova Georgieva and Patricia Uribe Granados.
The Foreign Ministry reiterates its commitment to promoting international law and to preparing new generations of international lawyers. It also congratulates all the universities that took part, along with their team members and families, and encourages them to remain engaged in this prestigious international competition, which strengthens the development of Mexican legal talent.
