The City of Norman's Division of Environmental Resilience and Sustainability (DoERS) will host a free, two-part compost workshop series this June, offering residents the opportunity to learn both the science and practical application of composting at home.
Participants may register for one or both sessions.
The first workshop, an indoor classroom session, will take place Sunday, June 14 from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Development Center, 225 N Webster Ave. The session will explore the science behind composting. Attendees will also experience a microscope demonstration highlighting the living organisms that help create healthy compost. Those interested in attending should register by June 12.
The second workshop, a hands-on outdoor session, will be held Saturday, June 27 from 9 to 11 a.m. at the LEAF facility, located at 333 Bratcher Miner Road. Participants will learn how to build and maintain compost bins, along with an introduction to vermicomposting, or composting with worms. Those interested in attending should register by June 25.
The workshops will be led by Leif Olson, a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Oklahoma under Dr. Robert Nairn. Olson studies microbial communities and adaptations in mine water remediation and brings a multidisciplinary background in ecology, wetlands, soil biology, mycology and bioremediation.
"Composting is one of the most tangible things our residents can do to close the loop on organic waste and help build a more resilient and sustainable community," said Michele Loudenback, Environmental and Sustainability Manager for the City of Norman.
