Briar Cliff Celebrates National First-Generation College Student Day

Briar Cliff Celebrates National First-Generation College Student Day

November 6, 2024

Briar Cliff University held its 8th Annual First-Generation College Celebration in the Heelan Atrium, bringing together students, faculty, and staff to honor the accomplishments of the University's first-generation students and recognize the dedication of first-generation faculty and staff.

The First-Generation College Celebration is part of a National Day of Recognition for students who are the first in their families to attend college. Held each November, the celebration marks the anniversary of the Higher Education Act of 1965 (HEA), a landmark legislation aimed at making higher education more accessible for all students. Like the Civil Rights Act and Voting Rights Act of that era, the HEA was instrumental in leveling the playing field, establishing federal initiatives such as TRIO programs, student loans, and federal grants to support underrepresented students in their pursuit of higher education.

Recognition Awards

As part of the celebration, Briar Cliff presented awards to outstanding members of the first-generation community. This year's awardees include:

Employee Awards

  • Margarite Reinert - Outstanding First-Generation Student Advocacy (Faculty)

  • Larry Obermeyer - Outstanding First-Generation Student Advocacy (Staff)

Student Awards

  • Lavar Harkins - First-Generation Student Achievement Award

  • Aman Rashid - First-Generation Student Achievement Award

Continuing the Legacy of the HEA

The annual First-Generation College Student Celebration serves as a reminder of the progress made and a call to action to continue building a more inclusive and supportive environment for first-generation students. Through TRIO programs, mentorship, and financial support, Briar Cliff is dedicated to providing resources and opportunities for students to succeed.
