Sandburg Songbag Concert Series kicks off March 8 at Carl Sandburg State Historic Site in Galesburg

SPRINGFIELD - The first music performance of the 2026 Sandburg Songbag Concert Series will take place Sunday, March 8 at the Carl Sandburg State Historic Site in Galesburg.

John Heasly and Jerry Schroeder will present an afternoon of Americana, vintage acoustic, pop and Celtic music from 2 to 4 p.m. in the barn at the historic site. A donation of $5 per person is suggested.

The Songbag Concert Series is a collaboration between the Carl Sandburg Historic Site Association and the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR), with additional support from the Mark and Celia Godsil Family Fund, a donor-advised fund of the Galesburg Community Foundation. IDNR operates state historic sites across Illinois.

The concert series is named in honor of Sandburg's 1927 book, "The American Songbag." Carl Sandburg collected and performed a variety of American folk songs and ballads, preserving 280 songs in his landmark volume. The listening-room style concerts feature intimate live music and storytelling and are held at the site of Sandburg's birth and final resting place. The series honors Sandburg's legacy as a poet, writer, activist and musician and celebrates the troubadour tradition reflected in "The American Songbag."

The Carl Sandburg State Historic Site, 313 E. Third St., is open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday. Admission is free. For more information, visit sandburg.org .
