U.S. Navy, Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force Hold Strategic Dialogue

22 June 2026

WASHINGTON - U.S. Navy and Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force leaders held the U.S. Navy-JMSDF Strategic Dialogue at the Pentagon, June 17, reaffirming both navies' shared commitment to maritime cooperation, interoperability, and readiness in support of a free and open Indo-Pacific.

Vice Adm. Yvette Davids, Deputy Chief of Naval Operations (DCNO) for Intelligence, Operations, Strategy, and Force Development, led the U.S. Navy delegation, meeting with senior JMSDF leaders to discuss shared maritime priorities, strengthen strategic alignment, and advance practical cooperation between two of the world's most capable maritime forces.

"The U.S. Navy and Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force have a deep and enduring partnership built on trust, shared values, and repeated operations together," said Vice Adm. Davids. "Strategic dialogues like this help us turn alignment into action - improving how we plan, train, operate, and adapt together."

The dialogue builds on the U.S. Navy-JMSDF Strategic Approach Plan, originally signed in 2020, and continues a regular series of senior-level staff engagements between the two navies. These discussions provide a structured forum to assess progress, identify opportunities for deeper cooperation, and align future priorities.

The U.S.-Japan alliance remains the cornerstone of regional peace and stability; through routine operations, exercises, exchanges, and strategic dialogue, both navies continue to strengthen deterrence and uphold a rules-based maritime order.

"This work is about readiness and deterrence," Davids said. "Our ability to learn together, solve problems together, and move faster together is a warfighting advantage. The strength of this relationship directly supports the Navy's ability to compete, deter, and, if necessary, fight alongside one of our closest allies."

The U.S. Navy and JMSDF will continue to advance shared maritime priorities through regular engagement, exercises, and operational cooperation across the region.
