Sunshine and Dedication Help Cary A+Team Gain Ground, Slick Spots Cause Cancelations to Continue

  • Cary A+Team made substantial progress on streets today and remains committed to working into the night, plowing and treating streets.

  • Curbside collection is delayed one day this week; download the CaryCollects app for service adjustments.

  • All staffed facilities, including the Citizen's Convenience Center, are closed Monday, February 2, and programs, events, and rentals are canceled; select GoCary services will operate starting at noon Monday.

Cary, NC - It's been progress-but not perfection-for Cary's streets today thanks to the magic of the A+Team, sunshine support from Mother Nature, and citizens staying off the streets. Crews successfully plowed primary and secondary thoroughfares, and made substantial progress on residential curbside collection routes. The Town does not treat private parking lots, including those in apartment and condominium complexes, businesses, or commercial centers. Since Winter Storm Gianna moved into the area, there have been seven weather-related crashes, including two with injuries; first responders assisted three stranded motorists; and there was one incident involving a water rescue. Cary 311 managed 26 storm-related cases.

"We had the trifecta of support working in our favor today, and we needed every bit of help to make real progress," said Emergency Operations Center Manager and Fire Chief Mike Cooper. "Back-to-back storms are tough, but our 400-plus staff are proud to be out there doing the hard work to help Cary get moving again."

Because great progress was made and to support a full recovery for Cary staff, Snow Command will reduce staffing to a skeleton crew and focus on icy patches, historically slick spots, and any remaining plowing/treating based on upcoming curbside collection schedules. Cary's Emergency Operations Center is flexing to a limited virtual posture and remains open into tomorrow with key positions staffed.

Based on the current forecast, the following Cary services are impacted for Monday, February 2:

  • Curbside collection is delayed one day this week. Please keep your carts off the street as best as possible so plows can fully service the area and consider downloading the Cary Collects app for service delays and adjustments.

  • Cary Town Hall and all staffed facilities will be closed on Monday, and programming is canceled. Cary employees who can work remotely should do so as part of storm recovery.

  • Monday's Citizen advisory boards are moved virtual; visit carync.gov/calendar to attend remotely.

  • Cary 311 phone lines are now closed for the day. Contact Cary 311 via email, text, web portal and social media anytime at carync.gov/311. Cary 311 will resume normal operations Monday at 7 a.m.

  • GoCary Fixed Route and Tier 1 Door to Door services will operate starting at noon on Monday.

Ensure you're ready for remaining adverse conditions:

  • Be proactive and locate your water shutoff valve to help protect your home in the event of frozen/broken pipes. Open cabinets beneath the kitchen and bathroom sinks to allow warmer air to circulate around pipes, and drip your faucets slowly if you feel your pipes may still freeze.

  • Do not park on the streets so that Town equipment can service the area.

  • Do not pass plow trucks while they are actively plowing.

  • Watch for signs of frostbite-loss of feeling and a white or pale look of fingers, toes, ear lobes, and the tip of the nose. Watch for signs of hypothermia-uncontrollable shivering, memory loss, disorientation, incoherence, slurred speech, drowsiness, and visible exhaustion.

  • Be neighborly and check on neighbors to ensure everyone is OK.

  • Avoid walking on and sledding near frozen bodies of water - ice may be unstable and can break without warning, posing a serious risk of injury or drowning.

  • Without power, temperatures indoors can drop quickly. Know how to stay warm. Use generators outdoors only, far away from windows; never use grills, ovens, or candles for heat; close off unused rooms to help manage heat, and dress in layers.

  • Report power outages to Duke Energy Progress anytime at 1-800-343-3525, or Apex Electric at (919) 372-7475. If someone in your neighborhood doesn't call, your area may not be on the repair list.

  • Stay informed by signing up for ReadyWake Alerts.

Residents are reminded to reserve 911 for immediate threats to life or property. For non-emergency concerns, such as slick spots or downed trees, contact Cary 311. If you must venture out, real-time road conditions can be viewed using Cary's live traffic cameras and traffic map at carync.gov/traffic. Watch a livestream of weather and sledding conditions in Downtown Cary Park at Cary's YouTube Channel.

The Town's next weather release will be at 9 a.m. Monday unless changing conditions warrant earlier action.
