CDFA OPENS PUBLIC COMMENT PERIOD FOR CALIFORNIA'S CLIMATE RESILIENCE STRATEGY FOR AGRICULTURE

Release #25-068

Español

SACRAMENTO, October 7, 2025 - The California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) is announcing that the Climate Resilience Strategy for California Agriculture is now open for public comment.

As climate change continues to affect every facet of our food system, California is taking bold action to ensure that agriculture remains resilient, sustainable, and a global leader in climate solutions. The Climate Resilience Strategy for California Agriculture outlines a comprehensive vision to help California farmers, ranchers, farmworkers, and agricultural communities prepare for and adapt to current and future climate impacts.

"We are already feeling the effects of climate change and want to do all we can to build resilience in agriculture," said CDFA Secretary Karen Ross. "This strategy reflects the many actions the state is already taking, and we look forward to hearing from farmers, ranchers, and the public about what more we need to support agriculture and healthy communities."

The Resilience Strategy is structured around three key pillars:

  1. Support a Thriving and Resilient Food Sector - addressing workforce development, infrastructure, energy, and economic sustainability;
  2. Protect Natural Systems Critical to Agriculture - focusing on water, biodiversity, soil health, and pest management;
  3. Encourage Resilient Agricultural Practices - promoting innovation, climate smart farming techniques, and long-term adaptation.

Across these pillars, the Strategy highlights existing state actions, identifies gaps in readiness, and recommends targeted strategies to build resilience across the agricultural landscape. It includes important context, strategies and actions, and implementation plans. The Strategy aligns with five overarching goals: enhancing technical assistance, improving program effectiveness, growing partnerships, streamlining policies, and advancing innovation.

The public comment period is open through Friday, November 7, 2025. CDFA encourages all interested stakeholders, including farmers, ranchers, industry partners, researchers, advocates, and community members, to review the draft and provide feedback.
