FDNY Commissioner Robert S. Tucker shares winter safety tips as cold weather continues across New York City

January 22, 2025

On Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2025, FDNY Commissioner Robert S. Tucker and Department officials shared winter safety tips as cold weather continues to impact in New York City.

"It is really cold outside right now, and we know that people are doing things that we are really concerned about," Fire Commissioner Tucker said from the FDNY Fire Zone in Manhattan. "The FDNY is ready to respond to any and all emergencies in New York City, but we need your help."

Fire Commissioner Tucker reminds New Yorkers of important winter safety tips, including:

  • Never use your stove or oven to heat your home.
  • Never leave a space heater unattended.
  • Plug space heaters directly into a wall outlet.

Fire Commissioner Tucker announced the cause of a 2-alarm fire Jan. 17 on Staten Island was a space heater that was plugged into an electrical extension cord, which was then plugged into a wall outlet.
