Eleven trade unions participated in the European meeting of the TUI Metal and Mining, organized by LAB on March 4th in Vitoria-Gasteiz, Basque Country.
The participating organizations committed to strengthening the TUI MM in two ways: firstly, by reinforcing the link between the trade union organizations and the TUI MM; secondly, by establishing coordination between the TUI MM Europe and EUROF, the European regional office of the WFTU, whose representative was also present at the meeting.
Likewise, the participating unions agreed to join forces to face the challenges that, in one way or another, affect the mining and metal sector in all countries:
-Promoting class consciousness and struggle to confront the interests of transnational corporations and capital in the metal and mining sector.
-Demanding public control over energy sources, infrastructure, and strategic industries.
-Opposing offshoring and job destruction.
-Defending employment and the rights of the working class in the context of the energy transition and digitalization.
-Opposing the expansion of the Arms Industry and working for the conversion of existing industries.
-Implementing preventative measures to protect the health and lives of workers.
-Promoting genuine equality between men and women workers, both in hiring processes and in promotions.
The conclusions of this meeting will be shared with the governing bodies of the TUI Metal and Mining and the World Federation of Trade Unions. Furthermore, WFTU member unions with a presence in the metal and mining sector that did not attend the meeting will be informed to facilitate their connection with the TUI MM in Europe.
