Between 1 and 5 June 2026, IFOAM - Organics International convened at an Extraordinary General Assembly (GA) to vote on a package of governance reforms and independent motions. Following extensive discussions, the membership approved the World Board proposals with an overwhelming majority.
This decisive vote marks a fundamental step forward in optimising the organisation's institutional framework. By reshaping and aligning its internal governance, IFOAM - Organics International is establishing a stronger foundation for global participation, balanced representation, and improved collaboration within the network. Ultimately, these updates reinforce the organisation's core commitments to robust governance, scientific credibility, and unified global representation for the organic sector.
The approval of these reforms signals the beginning of a new phase. Moving forward, the World Board will collaborate with members, partners, and international stakeholders to build a comprehensive implementation roadmap, establishing clear timelines, priorities, and continued avenues for engagement.
As Karen Mapusua, President of IFOAM - Organics International, noted during the closing of the Assembly:
Our strength lies in the engagement, diversity, and commitment of its membership. Throughout this process, members have contributed their perspectives, questions, and expertise in a spirit of shared responsibility for the future of our organisation. Passing the governance reform package is not the end. It is the beginning of the work to ensure that our movement remains effective, representative, and capable of responding to the opportunities and challenges ahead."
Bringing these structural changes to life will require collaboration, trust, and sustained engagement across the network. IFOAM - Organics International looks forward to working alongside the global community to translate these democratic decisions into meaningful and long-term impact on the ground.
