Tajani to Cypriot President Christodoulides: we support a government friendly to Italy. In Cyprus we will launch a “Peace Regatta”

While in Cyprus for the EU Council and a meeting with Italian business representatives, Minister of Foreign Affairs Antonio Tajani reaffirmed Italy's support and solidarity with the Cypriot Government, an EU Member State that was targeted in recent months by missile launches from Iran.

In a meeting with the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, Tajani confirmed Italy's intention to strengthen energy cooperation, a strategic sector for both countries and for the wider Eastern Mediterranean. "Moreover, Italy and Cyprus aim to work together to strengthen the Mediterranean segment of the IMEC corridor, a major strategic project to connect India to Europe through routes alternative to existing ones," the Minister recalled.

Tajani also announced that the Italian Embassy, under Ambassador Antonella Cavallari, will organise, in parallel with the America's Cup in Naples, a "Peace Regatta" open to crews from all Mediterranean countries. The initiative is also promoted in view of the America's Cup, which will take place in Naples in July 2027, and is expected to involve dozens of boats sailing the route between Ayia Napa and Limassol. The race aims to promote sport as a unifying factor-a "Peace Regatta" in a region currently severely affected by conflicts and tensions.
