AMA salutes two members for outstanding service and achievement

Published 4 December 2025

This week we salute former AMA Northern Territory President, Dr Paul Bauert, who has retired after many years of medical service and we congratulate AMA WA member Dr Haseeb Riaz (pictured), who is the Young Australian of the Year for WA.

Dr Bauert was President of AMA NT in 1993‒1994, 1999‒2002, 2005‒2006 and 2009‒2011. He was an advocate for improvements of child health services in the NT and was also the Paediatric Representative on AMA Federal Council for several terms.

In the 1980s, Dr Bauert was the first paediatric registrar in the NT under the eminent consultant Dr Alan Walker. As a consultant paediatrician, he practised in the NT and Queensland. He was twice awarded the AMA President's Medal for his outstanding service and advocacy for paediatric medicine. We wish Paul all the best in his retirement.

We also congratulate AMA WA member Dr Haseeb Riaz, who is the Young Australian of the Year for WA. Dr Riaz is a positive masculinity educator who co-founded the educational service MAN-UP.

Dr Riaz is an intern at Royal Perth Hospital and was chair of the Medical Student Council of WA, chair and board director of the Australian Medical Students Association and a medical student member of the Australian Medical Council. He won Young Australian of the Year in WA with Gareth Shanthikumar. They are both committed to addressing negative stereotypes of masculinity, which harm young men. They started MAN UP to help young men strengthen their mental health, communicate openly and build pathways to healthier lives.
