The City of Mission Viejo is hosting a public workshop on May 12 regarding City adoption of the Fire Hazard Severity Zone maps, as previously reported.
The workshop begins at 5:30 pm in the City Council Chamber at 200 Civic Center.
The public workshop will focus on the updated Fire Hazard Severity Zone Maps released by the California State Fire Marshal. As a result of the release of the maps, there are local changes to the Very High Fire Severity Zones and the addition of High Fire Hazard Severity Zones.
Per California law, the City is required to adopt the updated Fire Hazard Severity Zone maps for this jurisdiction within 120 days of their release by Cal Fire. Also per state law, the City cannot lower the Fire Hazard Severity, and feedback can only result in a higher severity designation (Gov Code 51179). These maps designate areas within Mission Viejo based on wildfire hazard potential and are part of California's ongoing efforts to strengthen wildfire preparedness and resilience.
The maps will be presented to the City Council for review and adoption at a future Council meeting.
This workshop provides an opportunity for the community and stakeholders to learn more about the Fire Hazard Severity Zone maps, ask questions, and provide input.
