The PES welcomes Radmila Shekerinska's new role as the next NATO Deputy Secretary General, following her appointment today by NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte. During her time in the North Macedonian government, she was Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence, and she is a PES Vice President.
PES President Stefan Löfven said:
"On behalf of the entire PES family, I would like to congratulate Radmila Shekerinska on her appointment as NATO Deputy Secretary General. This appointment underlines that North Macedonia is a reliable ally and partner both in NATO and in the European Union, and is a clear mark of recognition for the excellent work done by Ms. Shekerinska."
PES Secretary General Giacomo Filibeck said:
"Congratulations to Radmila on her appointment. It was under the Socialist government in North Macedonia when the country was accepted as a full member of NATO, and made the leap towards EU membership. Ms. Shekerinska, who was defence minister at the time played a key role in the process."
Radmila Shekerinska served under the socialist Prime Minister of North Macedonia Zoran Zaev as Deputy Vice Premier for European Integration and Minister of Defence, including in the lead-up to the country joining the NATO Alliance in 2020. She will take up her position as Deputy Secretary General of NATO later this year.
The PES family wishes her good luck in the new position and in facing the challenges that come with it. She has our full support.
