COLUMBUS, Ohio - During National Volunteer Week, April 19-25, 2026, the Ohio Department of Aging (AGE) and the Office of the State Long-Term Care Ombudsman recognize the contributions and advocacy of ombudsmen volunteers. They invite all Ohioans to contribute their time and empathy toward helping residents of nursing homes, assisted living facilities, and group homes.
"During National Volunteer Week, we celebrate the extraordinary dedication of our ombudsmen volunteers, whose unwavering commitment to advocacy ensures that every older Ohioan has a strong, compassionate voice on their side," said AGE Director Ursel J. McElroy. "Their work protects rights, strengthens our long-term care system, and brings dignity and respect to those they serve."
"Our ombudsmen volunteers play a critical role because they are often the first to notice concerns, elevate issues, and stand with residents who may not be able to speak up for themselves," added Leilani Pelletier, State Long-Term Care Ombudsman. "Their advocacy is essential to creating safe, respectful, and person-centered care for older Ohioans."
Ombudsmen volunteers work with nursing home and assisted living residents, family members, facility staff and leadership to help resolve care issues.
Ohio's 100,000 nursing home and assisted living residents need empathetic advocates looking out for their interests. Ombudsmen volunteers regularly visit facilities and speak with residents about their care. Volunteers are linked to their regional ombudsman program and provide services at facilities in their own communities. They receive comprehensive training and support from paid ombudsman staff.
