Media Advisory: Fire Station 8 Ribbon Cutting Ceremony

The San José Fire Department (SJFD) is excited to host a ribbon cutting ceremony for the new Fire Station 8 in Downtown San José.

Located at 601 E. Santa Clara St., at the corner of E. Santa Clara St. and 13th St., the new station replaces the former Fire Station 8 on 17th St., which proudly served the community since 1949 before reaching the end of its operational lifespan.

Fire Station 8 serves a large portion of Downtown San José, including City Hall and San José State University. Engine 8 is one of the busiest apparatus in the City, responding to more than 4,000 emergencies during Fiscal Year 2025-26, the second-highest total among all SJFD apparatus during that period.

The new station is a two-story, single-company facility totaling 5,562 square feet on an approximately 0.34-acre property. The station includes one apparatus bay, separate crew and captain offices, an open kitchen, dining and living area, an exercise room, and four private dormitories, each with its own private restroom.

Designed with energy efficiency and sustainability in mind, the station features numerous occupancy sensors and is the second City of San José facility designed and built to the City's new Zero Net Carbon (ZNC) standards. The solar-powered facility eliminates the use of natural gas. Energy-efficient equipment and appliances are used throughout, including for heating and cooling, hot water and cooking.

Fire Station 8 was funded through the Disaster Preparedness, Public Safety, and Infrastructure Bond, known as Measure T, which was approved by San José voters in 2018. The City acquired the property on May 4, 2022, and celebrated the groundbreaking on October 19, 2023. The facility was designed by Shah Kawasaki Architects.

Attendees will be treated to refreshments generously donated by Con Azucar Café, located within Engine 8's response area.
