A&M Texarkana Honors College Enrollment Growing Exponentially

TEXARKANA, Texas - In July 2024 Texas A&M University Texarkana launched the Honors College. Built on the foundation of an existing and successful Honors Program, Texas A&M University Texarkana's Honors College offers students a unique opportunity to shape their college experience by crafting their own curricular and co-curricular experiences, developing leadership skills on and off campus, and collaborating closely with faculty mentors on student-led research projects.

The new college added an additional honors scholarship for those who are accepted, which, along with the University's attention to recruiting more high academic achievers, has helped fuel the rapid rise in the number of honors students. When the Honors College was officially launched two years ago, there were approximately 80 honors students. For the start of the Fall 2026 academic semester, there will be over 600 students in the Honors College at A&M Texarkana.

Dr. Craig Nakashian served on the University's Honors Committee before being named the Program Director in 2014. In 2024, he became the inaugural dean of the Honors College. "Honors education is about giving motivated, talented students the opportunity to soar though an individualized curriculum," said Dr. Nakashian. "TAMUT students are challenged to Think Big, Dream Big, and Do Big, and in Honors we give them the tools to do that in ways that are most valuable to them. Our students can build their own path to an Honors graduation, and I am constantly impressed by their ingenuity, innovation, determination, and achievements. Whether they are interning in Washington, DC, opening their own businesses, running non-profit organizations, or delving more deeply into their majors, our students are taking what TAMUT has to offer and making the most out of it. I could not be prouder of them!"

"Being an honors student is a great academic experience," said Honors College student Raleigh Derrick. You are encouraged to participate in service projects that benefit the community. The academic requirements encourage you to do research on something you are interested in, build relationships with your professors and instructors, and broaden your understanding of your field of study."
