A legacy of healing: 110 years of compassionate care at Ascension Sacred Heart

On September 1, 1915, five pioneering Sisters from the Daughters of Charity opened the doors to Pensacola's first hospital - a bold and visionary act that would forever transform healthcare in our region. Their Mission was simple yet profound: to provide modern healthcare to all persons, with special attention to the poor and vulnerable.

That same Mission continues to guide us today at Ascension Sacred Heart, 110 years later.

Originally located on 12th Avenue, Pensacola Hospital was renamed Sacred Heart in 1948 and relocated to its current home on 9th Avenue in 1965. Since those early days, we have continuously evolved to meet the growing needs of our community, never losing sight of our founding values.

Over the decades, Ascension Sacred Heart has brought numerous medical firsts to Northwest Florida. In 1969, we opened what is still the region's only Children's Hospital - now known as the Studer Family Children's Hospital - offering a level of specialized pediatric care that is rare in communities of our size.

More recently, our commitment to innovation has led to other landmark achievements: We are now home to the region's only Level I Trauma Center, the only Pediatric Trauma Center and a nationally-certified Comprehensive Stroke Center. These designations reflect our relentless pursuit of excellence and our dedication to saving lives when every second counts.

To further expand access for our growing area, we're building freestanding ERs in Perdido and Pace and a new inpatient rehabilitation center on our Pensacola campus. We're also consistently bringing the latest technology to our patients, including the da Vinci 5 robotic surgical system - yet another regional first.

None of this would be possible without the vision and values of the Sisters who came before us. Today, we proudly stand on their shoulders, working to ensure a bright and healing future for generations to come.

At the heart of our work is our unwavering Mission. Our Catholic health ministry is dedicated to spiritually centered, holistic care which sustains and improves the health of individuals and communities. We are advocates for our community through our actions and words.

It is this enduring spirit - first ignited in 1915 - that continues to move us forward in 2025 and beyond.

As we celebrate 110 years of service at Ascension Sacred Heart, we are not only reflecting on our legacy - we are building the future. With gratitude for the past and hope for tomorrow, we remain devoted to advancing healthcare and touching lives with the same compassion and innovation that defined our founding.
